How to Start Investing With ₹5,000 a Month

· 5 min read · By FinMighty Team

Coins and plants showing money growing over time

Many people put off investing because they think it needs a big amount. It does not. A monthly ₹5,000 is enough to build a real habit, and the habit counts for more than the amount in the first few years.

Step 1: Build a small safety net first

Before you invest, keep some money aside for emergencies. A common target is three to six months of expenses in a savings account or liquid fund. If you do not have that yet, you can build it alongside your first SIP, say ₹3,000 to the emergency fund and ₹2,000 into investments, and shift the balance later.

Step 2: Cover the basics of protection

A health insurance policy and, if anyone depends on your income, a term plan should come before aggressive investing. One hospital bill can wipe out years of savings, and insurance is what stops that from happening.

Step 3: Give your money a purpose

Write down what the money is for and when you need it. A holiday in two years, a down payment in seven, retirement in twenty-five. The time frame decides how much risk makes sense:

  • Under 3 years: debt or liquid funds, where safety matters more than growth.
  • 3 to 7 years: a mix of equity and debt, such as hybrid funds.
  • 7 years or more: equity funds, which can ride out ups and downs over time.

Step 4: Start a SIP and automate it

Set the SIP date a day or two after your salary arrives so the money moves before you can spend it. Doing KYC and setting up an auto-debit takes one sitting.

Step 5: Increase it every year

When your income grows, raise your SIP too. Even a 10% step-up each year makes a noticeable difference to the final amount over a long period.

Remember: returns are not fixed, and mutual funds carry market risk. What you control is how regularly you invest and how long you stay invested.
